Years ago since I bloomed a Cattleya and unfortunately this doesn't have a name tab. I think the word Ruby is in there somewhere. The flower measures 5.5" in width x 7" in height and the colour is a dark red velvety shade' Thanks for any info.

Ed

That's a real head scratcher Ed, I wondering if it has some Lc. Mattie Shave 'York' in it. But the dark staining in the petals is not common, although I have seen some of this in some hybrids. I looked through about 800 photos and have about 1,000 left to go through. This defiantly has peaked my curiosity.

Ed as we always say you will probably never know unless you originally knew the name and just need a reminder. The closest I could get to yours from ones I have grown is Rlc. Murray Spencer 'Amroys Dark Star'. It has the same markings in the lip from the dowiana background as yours but is lighter in colour, although different cameras, screens etc seem to give their own hue.

Whatever it is it looks great.

Looks like it has a bad case of virus with those colour breaks in the flowers.
Not uncommon in mericlones from Asia,

Getting close with this one Terry although the colour on mine can only be described as a very dark, deep majenta,

No luck, some close looking ones but the staining's could be a clone gone bad.

Ed just remember that colours are difficult to reproduce exactly particularly if flash is used as it was when I took this pic. As I remember it this flower was much darker than it appears on my screen. This pic shows it darker

Hi David. I don't think this is a virus. The leaves are perfectly unblemished. I think that when the bulb was opening I accidentally sprayed it with
some bug killer. But, you could be right so time will tell. Thanks for all the information.

Ed

Fingers crossed Ed!
I had identical symptoms on a new Cattleya from Germany last year.
The vendor confirmed it was virus from a flower photo.
It too had perfect leaves.
They replaced the plant,
Regards,
David
