Hey guys!

This is my Mum's phal I took on a few weeks ago as it wasn't looking great. I've repotted it and cut away a load of rotten roots. The medium it was in was sodden wet and it does look a little happier now.

What are these spikes coming up? At first I thought they were ariel roots but they've grown loads and they have the weird brown tip? I've only just noticed the second one coming through the leaves tonight. Any help much appreciated!!

They are aerial roots and are perfectly normal for a phal to have them growing in that way. The dark area is the growing tip of the root and shows that it is actively growing.

Brilliant, it's survived its re-potting then! Should I mist these when I water it or leave well alone?

I am usually reluctant to mist my phals as there is danger of getting water into the crown of the plant causing crown rot. However if the normal roots in the pot are not established it may be beneficial to spray the aerial roots from time to time. Just be careful not to let any water sit in the crown, that is where all of the leaves join the stem.
