We just received four live specimens of Gastrodia elata Bl
Form Sichuan we are being asked to research ways to propagate it for both reintroduction and its medicinal commercial use. The herb is used in Traditional Chinese medicine and as a Sichuan cuisine. It is one of the three orchids listed in the earliest known Chinese Materia Medica (Shennon bencaojing) (c. 100 AD). Gastrodia elata Bl. Chinese name is Tian Ma (天麻) and is Synonym to Gastrodia mairei Schltr. Gastrodia elata Bl is listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN Red List.

Flowering season May to July, fruit time July to August.

We will post photos when and if we get them to flower.

Interesting looking plant. Leaves look tiny to produce such a huge tuber so can I assume it gets most of its nutrition via fungus as in our Birds Nest Orchid? In which case it is going to be a challenge for you to grow.
The fifth Google result was for buying dried tubers on eBay. What does CITES make of this?

It will be very interesting and somewhat of a challenge to grow this.

Gastrodia elata grows in symbiosis with the fungus Armillaria mellea on rotting wood, depending on the hypha of the fungus to invade the root system so that the plant can absorb nutrients from A. mellea.

We did receive enough native soil to pot them up. But my curiosity about the symbiosis is peaking. I have some students from that area who will look into it.

You have brought up a good point about CITES.
