Just attempted pollination! This is for fun and and practice really. Pollen parent is a mannii, pod parent a magenta noid from Sainsburies.

Note for anyone trying it: the mannii pollen is tiny! Much smaller than the commercial phal's. Probably would have been easier the other way, but I want to grow on the mannii before I do anything else with it.

The first lot of mannii pollen I tried to flip the cap off the flower. Thought I hadn't succeeded. Then realised I had something in my mouth! Really... With that happening, and it being so small I ended up putting two lots on! Hope the bit of spit will be good luck.

Hahaha sounds like quite the adventure! Good luck with the cross. It sounds a bit of an oddball combination, but you never know what might come of it...after all, it has lucky spit!

Good luck Rowan, an exciting time for you now. If it has taken you should see the flower wilt within a couple of days. However wilting does not mean it will necessarily produce seeds.
:(

Or it will produce seeds but infertile ones!

LOL. Well the flower is wilting, so tick one! It was only open a couple of days before I pollinated, so it's definitely not old! Looks like I did it just in time: the oldest flower on my mannii is starting to fade: it opened at Christmas. The ones I actually used are the youngest, but they've still been open a few weeks and I guess they might go fast now. I've been planning this for a while, but was doubting the two would overlap!

I have a selfed Paph spicerianum as well, best part of 100 days now I think. That I keep thinking the pod is swelling, but I think I'm kidding myself yet. I think the phals will be overtaking if all goes well...

Sounds meticulously planned! If you ever want phal pollen from anything I have in flower, you are welcome. I'm sure if the americans can send it in the post we can do it too  . I have no interest in breeding my own, but will gladly give out pollen if I have what you want.

Thanks Rakki, I'll keep it in mind! Though I think I will have to make sure I don't go mad on this. I have trouble finding room for all my plants as it is!

Update: flower now well wilted. Two others that were buds are opening. Interestingly on the mannii the oldest flower and the two used for pollen (which were the youngest) are now nearly gone, but the flowers in between are still looking good.

I'm now about 50% my spicereanum pod is starting to swell.

Here's some pics...

Well, looks like the ovary is swelling! Pretty definite now!

Of course with my paph I'm only at about 60% that it's swelling. I guess phals really are a lot faster than paphs!

Absolutely definite the phal pod is swelling. Still a little unsure about the paph (I have a feeling it's probably twice the size but just so slow I'm not seeing the difference!)

Meanwhile, I know the phal cross is not registerable (unless it turns out totally extraordinary I guess!) but I just thought of a name I could call it by: Phal Slightly A Noid Mann.

Phal Slightly A Noid Mann hahahaha nice  ! I tend to call Noids silly things like Noid Noidington . On the other hand, they get description of what they are and the word Noid. So we have 'big awesome harlequin noid' .

Ooooh I really like when people try to cross their own orchids. I have some seeds of mine , but do not know what to do with them. Good luck :) I am sure it will be a fantastic cross and I think you should call it GOOD LUCK SPIT :))))

Nah, I think I'm sticking to the name *G*

If you want information on flasking, look at the sticky threads here: http://www.orchidboard.com/community/propagation/

Meanwhile the phal pod is huge! The paph pod looks much the same LOL

My Phal pod split today! Unfortunately I don't think there's any good seed. I'm not sure... There's something in small amounts and really tiny. I've tried to take a picture. Pictures I've found of pods seem to show stuff like this but in much larger amounts and darker. One of those sources referred to a pod drying for a few days though, so I'm going to give it a few days left in a cup just to see if the 'stuff' does darken. I'm not hopeful though. Even if that is seed, I don't think there's a great deal and it might be dud, undeveloped seed. At the moment it's the same colour as the pod's fluff. I don't have anything to look at it magnified. Picture, taken with super macro, is of some of the stuff smeared on the side of a cup. It seems to want to stay there...

Hi, I didn't flask it. It didn't look good, and I was way to busy at the time to mess around with something that most likely wasn't going to work. Still haven't got a loupe, but if I get round to it I kept some of the seed to look. I suspect it is seed, but without embryos: it looked like tiny little sticks rather than tiny little sticks with fat middles!
