Hello,

I will be in UK from 17-22 March, passing through north Wales and heading to Yorkshire.
It is a long shot, but can anyone mention any orchid events or nurseries that I might take in.
The only nursery I know of is Dave Parkinson's disa nursery but he doesn't allow visitors.
Thanks for any help.

Hi Rachel. The North of England will be holding their monthly show on 19th March. There will be a couple of vendors attending and at this meeting it will be the plant auction. You can get all the information from our website or email me if you require any further information.

I believe there is the Darlington & District Orchid Society Annual Show, Sadberge Village Hall. 11-4. 20/3/16.

I got it from the BOC Year Book. Contact details Maurice.local@ntlworld :)

Also, Phoenix orchids in Halifax, West Yorkshire seem to do appointment only viewing. I've gotten plants from them before and was pleased. They don't do a list as such but if you email them with things you like they will tel you if they have it or something similar :) Dorothy does the shows I believe and her husband was the one I contacted about the plants in the first instance on rwrhodes50@gmail.com

.

Phoenix Orchids are members of the NEOS and display their wares every month at our shows. Nice plants and very reasonable prices.

Darlington is also a very good society and their annual show will be very good,

Rachel.
You can always look at the BOC website www.british-orchid-council.info then look at the events page and you will see a complete list of shows which usually have their vendors shown too. Those details are not always in the Year Book (which you can see an electronic version on the site too).

Thank you, Richard. I just had a look at that. It doesn't list the North of England show on 19th near Preston but it lists others and the Darlington show. I think the North of England one is my best bet, if I can swing it.

The problem with all lists is that they are only as good as the Society who inputs the data!
I think that an issue here might be that North of England call all their regular meetings "shows", as looking at their website they have speakers at them too except the big shows. Even so, without input from the Society that information will never get to the BOC lists.

Just to clear up a point we have a table show every month when the members present their plants for judging We do not advertise our monthly shows with the BOC. Our main show for the club is when we have our biggest event at Tatton Park in June, At this particular meeting,on the 19th of March, we will not be having a speaker because of our plant auction where all are welcome. We are the oldest orchid society in the world and next year we will be having the orchid curator from the Smithsonian museum in New York as one of our guest speakers. Is there some point, that i am unaware of, which makes the BOC the be all and end all for orchid enthusiasts.
I'm probably missing your point Richard but our shows are what we say they are with many awardable plants being on display.
Not meaning to offend anyone but I am proud of the sociability of our society.

No, Ed, BOC is not the be all and end all. It is just that it provides a central quick reference point and repository for Societies to place information - after all, that is one facility for which Member Societies pay their subscription.
