I am thinking of visiting South Africa later this year. Probably mostly around the SW Cape, but with possibility to perhaps get up north a bit towards Namaqualand, or even branch out to the Drakensberg for a few days.

Can anyone suggest what the best time of year would be to see wild orchids in the SW Cape (or Drakensberg)? In addition, I would like to be be able to catch a greater part of the fynbos in flower at the same time. And - if the seasons work like that - see some of the bulbs in flower towards Namaqualand.

Perhaps these are really three completely different seasons, but can anyone advise?

Best wishes,

Rob, I haven't been on here for ages, but are you looking to see any particular groups of orchids say Disa etc, other general terrestrials/epiphytes? Let me know. I can help with a few localities.

I am at least forty years out of date on South Africa. Transvaal area bordering Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, if it has not developed up.
You can check with the South African or Cape orchid society.
Safety note: Check troubled areas with you embassy or consulate, before you go out looking.
