I wonder if you folks would be good enough to give me a consensus of opinion -
My situation is that I have a south-facing bay window with a wide window sill on a south-facing hillside so it gets all the sun there can be in Yorkshire. I move my orchids around depending on the time of year and how bright the sun is on a daily basis.

I would like to be able to fill that window sill with orchid plants. What amount of shading would I need in the window? Would two layers of net curtain do it (net curtain would avoid ruining the decor!) or a venetian blind (but I don't like them and it would occupy some of the space) or would I have to go to heavy greehouse shading (which would ruin the decor)

At the moment I am growing Phals, Oncidium, Zygopetalum, Colmanara.

I grow cattleyas in exactly this position with no shading in autumn spring and winter.
They spend summer in a greenhouse.
I would start with a single layer of net curtains and see how the plants react.
If you check them every couple of days you will be able to decide,
David

I would agree with David with one reservation. I don't think that the zygo would do well in full sun, even in Yorkshire. Mine like it cool and shady.

Sounds encouraging. It occurs to me that even with a net curtain those in coarse compost will dry out very quickly.
