....is your daily/weekly orchid regime ?

Mine is about 2-3 hours per day and and at times it's bloody boring, mostly when I want to get on with other things, but it has to be done.
Problem is I've made a rod for my own back because I have a fixation for mounted plants and about 100 of those which take all the time (plus about 30 in pots).
But there are also good things about it when looking at them closely on a daily basis when watering, I get to spot that first little sign of a bud as soon as it starts to appear or that tiniest bit of new green growth on a plant I split and thought I may lose.

This years London Show may be the first I don't attend because another new batch of plants would mean another hour on my regime which I really don't want or need.
:? Still, I suppose I could just go and look keeping my hands firmly in my pocket?

Steve

Few minutes every day to check the saucers. About once a week I'll spend 30 minutes or so to flush the pots. I only have about 20-30 plants in S/H culture and I'm desperately trying to keep my collection small (on windowsills).

I had to think long and hard about this Steve as it depends a lot on time of year. At the moment it only takes about 3 hours a week. All plants in the house are watered once a week, those in cool greenhouses only once every three weeks! Add to that staking and pest care as needed and it's not much.
Things will change significantly once Spring is here and I have to repot a lot of cyms though. Watering also increases as the weather warms up but by then most of my plants are outside so watering is not such a delicate procedure.
All in all I reckon that my weekly time is about the same as your daily.

Thanks Tom & Terry,

I can only dream of a watering regime like yours, it would be really great, even if I could get it down to just one hour per day.

Maybe I'll look at the number of plants I could remove from mounts and put into pots (but it would have to be quite a few to make any difference.)

Or maybe be more selective with your collection, trade or sell plants which aren't doing so well and pick up some new?

As long as you are enjoying the time you spend with them there's nothing bad about it. Some of my happiest moments are spent pottering about with my orchids, especially when its time to repot. If I have a quiet sunday that 30min can easily become an hour and I would like to have more time spend with my plants. When I eventually settle down I would love to have my own greenhouse and have a regime like yours.

Hi Tom.

Spot on, I should stop buying the ones that are just "nice", plus the gap-filling bargains at the local Garden Centre/DIY stores and wait until I see those real special favourites.

What's that about the grass always being greener! ;)
