I have this plant given to me by a friend. All I can think is that it is some sort of oncidium but it looks kind of familiar. Any ideas as to its makeup?

At first I thought you were close with that suggestion........................ but not close enough. I was thinking of the Flying High 'Stars 'n Bars' which is the most common of this cross and the colouring is correct but flower shape is not. But then I remembered that there is a Flying High 'Peloric' with the wider tips on the petals, unlike the pointed tips of the sepals........it could be that plant if it was ever mass produced.

Thanks for your suggestion it certainly will have much of the breeding of Flying High so I can adjust conditions accordingly.

There is one called flying big Hawaii but I don't know if that is in the UK.
I find very difficult to grow personally

I did a search for peloric Aliceara, and happened upon this: http://plantexplorer.longwoodgardens.org/weboi/oecgi2.exe/INET_ECM_DispPl?NAMENUM=29992&DETAIL=1

Looks pretty close?

Thanks for that Natalie. I think Blondie hit the nail on the head with his suggestion and the pic from your link (as you say) is almost identical to my plant.
