Has anyone used a broken up Thermalite building block, as far as I know, it's similar to other potting media, it could be worth a try, it's light easy to get hold of good thermal value will retain some moisture?

Almost any medium can be used for growing orchids you just have to adapt your watering regime to the medium so unless there is anything toxic in the block it should work ok.
