Hello folks,

I thought I would post information about my just-published book here. So exciting.
It is not orchid specific but, well, you can hear all about it in this promotional video, which includes views of pages.

Thanks, Rob. Yes, the articles were written over eight years as columns in an Irish gardening magazine, the Irish Garden. This is the collected works.

This is far from an encyclopaedia.
Thank you and thanks to Rob too.

I call it an encyclopedia because my main goal in writing this is to clarify the many misnomers about the genus vanilla. As of now it is 573 pages and over 78 thousand words and I haven’t counted the photos and plates so far. The citations alone cover 21 pages, and growing.

This is one of five books that I am working on:
Encyclopedia of vanilla
Chinese native orchids
Chinese orchid markets
OCRC manual of orchid micro propagation
Native Orchids of Chambai Mountian

Goodness, so many books all at once.
I usually abandon one before I move on to work on the next. lol.
Seriously though, some of those sound like they will be very interesting.

The Encyclopedia of vanilla has been the challenge, the OCRC manual of orchid micro propagation is realy just repetition and putting it to paper. The others are just gathering photos anf facts.

Books with photos are so expensive to produce. I agonised long and hard about putting colour photos in my book (which I have in abundance) but decided in the end that it would just make it too expensive.
In the end my daughter did a series of line drawings - 25 in total - which give a nice arty feel to the finished product.
I had occasion to check the GBP price today for someone and it works out at £7.97 + £3.99 postage. I think I made the right call in the end.
Thank you for posting the link, Rob.

Many books are now being produced or copied in China because of cheap materials and labor.

Hello Rachel
Congratulations on producing your book. You are a very good orchid grower as we have seen by your pictures and videos and I am sure your publication will be just as exciting.
